Engaging Americans in shaping the work of government should be every advocate’s issue. And yet, communicators often undermine public faith and engagement in government, and relatedly, in public policy solutions. Strategists play on negative public sentiment and encourage efforts to “run against government.” Even those who avoid the most damaging communications approaches are frequently stumped by the challenge of critiquing government actions while not undermining public support for the role of the public sector. The focus of the Public Will Initiative is addressing this challenge.
